Lord Jesus, give to us, the people of St. Matthew’s, the eyes to be able to see you and the ears to be able to hear you so that we can follow you according to your way. Through the guidance of your Holy Spirit direct us to your perfect will for us. We desire to know how and what you would have us do for the spread of your kingdom in the world. Enlighten the Mission Task Group and empower us to be what you would have us be and do what you would have us do so that we might glorify you and love our neighbors. We ask this in the name of Jesus, who with the Father and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns for ever and ever. AMEN.

Announcements

TODAY WE WELCOME BACK organist Joan L. Neff. She is Associate Professor of Sociology and Criminal Justice and Associate Provost at the University of Richmond. She is also the Assistant Organist for Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church during the academic year. Susan Wilson is attending the Scarritt Graduate School reunion this weekend in Nashville, Tennessee.

THE WANNABEES will meet at the Rectory on September 6 at 7:30 p.m.

TGIF STARTS SEPTEMBER 10! This Men's breakfast/Bible discussion group meets from 7:00 to 8:00 a.m. on Fridays in the parish hall. It’s the best $2.00 breakfast in town! All men are welcome.

SUNDAY SCHOOL RESUMES next Sunday at 9:15 a.m.

WE STILL NEED 5 SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS! Sunday School starts in two weeks and I'm starting to panic. Please prayerfully consider teaching this year. The program is rotational - you first serve as assistant for a month, then as teacher the second, then off for two months. The curriculum is easy to teach and already set for you. Contact Jill Rich if you can help.

DO YOU LOVE HOLDING BABIES? We need baby holders in the infant nursery. Please consider serving every 6 - 8 weeks helping out with our littlest parishioners. Call Jill at 288-1911 for more information.

THE LATEST NEWS REGARDING THE PLAYGROUND is that the $5000.00 matching donation was raised. We were able to raise $9,041.40 to be added to the $5000 match and the $5000 donation. If we can raise an additional $958.60 more we will reach a total of $20,000 for the renovation of the playground. Beyond that for an additional $1700 we can purchase a new toddler slide.

THROUGHOUT THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER THE PARISH will be focusing on mission during the Sunday School hour. All ages will be exploring mission from the perspective of the Father, Son and Spirit. In addition to the Sunday morning offering, each weekend, service opportunities will be available for all ages. For further information contact Jill Rich at the church office.

September 11- Join the children at 10:00 a.m. in decorating and assembling shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. Samaritan's Purse will ship our boxes of gifts to children all over the world who will not otherwise have a Christmas present.

September 18 - This is Churchwide clean up day. Come ready to scrub the church top to bottom (or as much as we can). Many hands make light work.

September 24 - It’s a recipe exchange! Bring a dish to freeze for the youth group and a dish to share (plus the recipe).

September 25 - Service activity with CHAT, Church Hill Activities and Tutoring. Contact Boyd Brown at 363-1292 for more information.

HANDBELL CHOIR REHEARSALS will resume on Sunday afternoon, September 26 at 1:00 p.m. More information will be forthcoming.

THE TIME FOR SINGERS IS NOW in the Chancel Choir. It’s a great time to consider joining. Not sure you want to commit for the entire year? Then come join us on a trial basis. Try it out for a while and you may discover what a great group it truly is! Rehearsals are held on Thursday nights from 7:00-9:00 p.m. If you are in need of childcare during the rehearsal time, please let Susan Wilson know and we may be able to assist you.

THE CHILDREN’S CHOIR SEASON will resume next Sunday, September 12 at 5:00 p.m. with a cookout for children’s choir singers and parents. It will take place at the home of Vanessa and Greg Peete. Bring a side dish, drink, or dessert. If you have a lawn chair bring that also. For further information contact Susan Wilson at the church office. Parents, as you are planning the fall activity schedules of your children, please be sure to make room for Children’s Choir here at St. Matthew’s. Children’s Choir is for children 4 years old - 5th grade. Rehearsals are on Sunday afternoons from 5:00-6:00 p.m. It’s a wonderful opportunity to introduce music to your children. They learn music reading skills, vocal techniques and they develop and grow in their faith by learning about and participating in worship.

ST. MATTHEW’S WEEKEND COMING SOON! Please plan on joining your fellow parishioners here on the grounds on Saturday, September 18 and Sunday, September 19. Our weekend begins with the Ice Cream Social and a Grand Night for Singing on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. This family night includes ice cream and music presented by the Chancel Choir and friends. Whether you enjoy a Sound of Music sing along or would rather hear a tune from Oklahoma it’s sure to be a fun night. This intergenerational event will be a fun night but not a late one so families are encouraged to come! The celebrating certainly doesn’t end there. Join us for morning worship as Chuck Alley preaches on the morning of September 19. Following worship, stay for lunch on the lawn.

QUILT DRAWING -In conjunction with the Fine Arts and Crafts Showcase on Sept. 11 and 12 a drawing for a “Scrappy Squares” quilt will take place on Sunday, Sept. 12 immediately following the 10:30 a.m. service. Nine quilters from St. Matthews pooled their talents to make this original Augusta Cole design. All proceeds will go to St. Matthews Outreach. You do not need to be present to win. Tickets will be available for your donation of $1 (1 ticket) or $5 (6 tickets) after today’s service in Parish Hall. Tickets may also be purchased during the week from individuals.

WOW Women of the Well is looking for new members to help support this ministry. WOW was created for women ages 20 to 120 to gather at the WELL and be treated to nourishment (great food!), engage in fellowship and receive the spiritual boost from one of the great speakers. If you can make suggestions for speakers or themes or if you like to cook or share your creative side and would like to be a part of this ministry, please contact Paula Butz (273-0381), Robin Hagerty (741-0999), Sherry Kerley (360-5748), or Harriet Vincent (360-5222). To continue offering child care during our brunches, volunteers are needed to baby sit for the 2 hour brunch and program. Come join us!
